We are all encircled by Spirit, yet so much is happening on our planet right now to both applaud and abhor that sometimes it can be difficult to remember that spirit comes to us in dance, through meditation, and it even occasionally comes through beer. Read on!

Events this coming weekend point to the importance of every one of us making the magical journey of self-empowerment by contributing positive thoughts, energy and even money to significant causes that deserve our attention.

1 – HONORING THE LANDNOW!

Through the practice of Yoga and Hula, we make a difference in the world by moving in alignment with nature. Kumu Keala Ching will continue his Thursday events on March 7 at the Kona Beach Yoga Studio beginning at 3:30 pm with Keiki Hula, at 4:30 with Kahiko, and while he usually teaches Hawaiian Language at 5:30, we will need to adjourn after the hula classes (only on March 7 — on March 14 Hawaiian classes will resume as usual and all yoga classes will continue throughout the week).

The hula which Kumu created specifically for this land at Kamakahonu Cove – the Cove of the Eye of the Turtle – is being practiced by beginners and seasoned hula dancers alike. On this place between the ancient Beacon Altar, the Shrine that Radiates Energy called Ahuena Heiau, and the modern Marriott Hotel, dancers are helping to weave harmony between the old and the new. Chinese, Japanese, Hungarian, American and Hawaiian participants step lightly on the land and give hope to a future that overcomes difficulty through understanding, harmony and health.

On Saturday, March 9, thousands of people will gather here in the spirit of pualu (working together) and malama ‘aina (respecting the land) on the beautiful shores of Kailua Bay for the Kona Brewers Festival, which has become one of Kailua-Kona’s premier events. Over the last 18 years, this amazing community celebration and benefit has raised $555,000 for children’s projects, the environment, and cultural and artistic groups like the Hula Halau, Na Wai Iwi Ola, who will dance two new hulas at the opening blessing of the festival.

The Kamakahonu Cove hula created by Kumu Keala tells the story of the sun bursting forth at dawn from Hualālai Mountain, a glorious occasion that reminds us every day of the sacredness of life. Hualālai has been a home to native people since ancient times, and centuries ago, they built Ahu A Umi Heiau on the dry plateau east of the mountain. This upper temple aligns with the Beacon Temple, Ahuena Heaiau, at the seaside festival site. Kamakahonu Cove, a favored retreat of Hawaiian royalty long before the westernization of Hawai’I, was selected by Kamehameha I for his retirement and peace-making years after his eight-year campaign to unite the Hawaiian isles.

The 18th annual Kona Brewers Festival indulges craft beer aficionados on Hawaii’s Big Island, and on Saturday, they will tap up 70 types of ales and lagers served alongside a cornucopia of island-style cuisine from 35 Hawaii chefs.

In other words, guests will be treated like royalty – and all for a good cause!

2 – HEALING THE WATERSATURDAY, MARCH 9 6 PM & SUNDAY, MARCH 10 6 PM

Japanese author and entrepreneur Dr. Masaru Emoto, best known for his research showing that that human consciousness has an effect on the molecular structure of water, will share dinner and his most recent theories at the Dragonfly Ranch Healing Arts Center in Honaunau on Saturday evening, March 9.

Dr. Emoto’s ideas appeared in the documentary “What the Bleep Do We Know!?” where he claimed that positive words like “love” and “gratitude” could actually transform and heal the world’s water and oceans.

In West Hawaii last week, he shared a vision for a worldwide coordinated blessing/ho’oponopono for the ocean and water around the planet, to be timed with the exact moment of the two year anniversary of the Fukushima earthquake in March of 2011. It didn’t take long for local environmentalists and organizers to create a ceremony and healing to be held at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel Banyan tree at 7 pm on Sunday, March 10 (March 11 in Japan).

Dr. Emoto will be joining Kumu Keala Ching in offering a purification ceremony for the Pacific Ocean and all water around the planet. Kumu Keala chant his powerful original blessing for water in the Hawaiian language. Everyone in all parts of the world is invited to join this effort to heal the polluted oceans and waterways of the planet.

3. BEGINNER’S MIND YOGAFRIDAY, MARCH 15 @ 6 PM

Whether you’re new to yoga and meditation or an old hand at calming the chatter in the bodymind, the best mind is Beginner’s Mind. That’s why I’m offering a Beginner’s Mind Yoga course designed to give people the tools they need for a life-long practice that promotes health, better relations and deeper access to creativity and joy. I will be teaching a basic set of poses that people will be likely to encounter in the average Gentle or Vinyasa Yoga class, including Surya Namaskar (Sun Salute), the seven fundamental movements of yoga, and moving with the breath.

Learning an opening invocation, Ujjiya Pranayama (victorious breath), Anjali Mudra (prayer hands), Urdhva and Adho Mukha Svanasana (upward and downward dog), Uttanasana (forward bend), plank, lunges and variations, students will develop tools for home practice by the end of the six-week course. Newcomers are invited to come to the first class on Friday, March 15 without having to make a commitment to the full series, but it will be an amazing six weeks and I hope you’ll join us!

Each week, we’ll review what we learned the previous week, discuss our experience with meditation and add new poses. Students always tell me they are astounded how easy it is to break old habits, feel better than ever and discover the truth of their own being through simple but magical poses.

In my previous classes, students who have studied with other teachers have been surprised at how they learn to approach the poses in a new way, without preconceived notions. That’s what Beginner’s Mind is all about. We discover enthusiasm for learning new things and realize new ways of contemplating old things.

It’s our state of mind that makes all the difference. Our state of mind makes the journey magical.
