HISTORIC GMO-FREE HAWAII COUNTY COUNCIL VOTE ON PROHIBITION

Soon, the Hawaii County Council will have the opportunity to make a pro-active choice for a healthy world. Their vote will affect the future direction of Hawaii Island agriculture and help gain a foothold for natural food and local ownership of food supplies.

The Institute of Science in Society urges all governments to repel Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Top international scientists are extremely concerned about the hazards of GMOs to biodiversity, food safety, human and animal health, and demand a moratorium on environmental releases in accordance with the precautionary principle.

They are opposed to GM crops that will intensify corporate monopoly, exacerbate inequality and prevent the essential shift to sustainable agriculture that can provide food security and health around the world.

Calling for a ban on patents of life-forms and living processes which threaten food security, sanction biopiracy of indigenous knowledge and genetic resources, they claim GMOs violate basic human rights and dignity. And they want more support on research and development of non-corporate, sustainable agriculture that can benefit family farmers all over the world. (www.i-sis.org.uk/list.php)

Many of us are standing strong — and standing in green – at the Kona council chambers — when the council meeting is reschedule — to preserve natural food sources and prevent a monoculture based on deadly pesticides and debilitating poisons.

For the keiki, for the ocean, for the land, for all your brothers and sisters and friends, show up for Bill 79, either in person, or by becoming more educated about GMOs.

One idea which has been floating among council members is a bill to delay for further study, and to forge a plan for “co-existence” between the organic, non-GMO, and GMO farmers. This is folly. Organic and non-GMO farmers’ seeds would always become contaminated due to pollen drift, insects and wind. Co-existence only works for GMO farmers. For future generations and the earth itself, support a farming future that is small-scale organic, close to nature and respectful of human health.

Studies link GM foods to altered metabolism, inflammation, kidney and liver malfunction, and reduced fertility. In one experiment, multiple generations of hamsters fed a diet of GM soy produced offspring until the third generation, when they produced about half as many pups as the non-GM soy group.

Have an allergy or sinus infection? When genes are transferred between plants, allergenic proteins (from, say, peanuts or wheat) may pop up in unexpected places (like soy or sugar). A former scientist for Monsanto, Richard Goodman, PhD, also professor of food science and technology at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, says that seed companies run sophisticated tests to prevent that kind of mistake from happening. But inserting new genes into a seed’s delicately constructed genome is always a gamble. No one can predict all the consequences. There is, for example, the possibility of creating brand-new allergens.

Despite the potential health implications, more GM foods appear each year. Once the GMO Genie is out of the bottle it can’t be put back.  We can, however, help stop the surge of toxins and foster greater health for all people, naturally, by supporting Margaret Wille’s historic and significant Bill 79 to prohibit cultivation of GMO crops in Hawaii – with one exemption. The growing of GMO papayas is supported by GMO-Free Hawaii Island because GMO papayas are so prevalent and the island industry would be devastated by a ban. The compromise position encourages farmers to share knowledge and market opportunities for premium-price non-GMO papaya around the world.
