ANTI-VIRAL PARADISE | DIY PROTECTION

Legend tells of four Thieves during the Black Death plague in the Middle Ages who robbed the dead but never contracted the disease. When finally caught, they revealed they had rubbed their bodies with an essential oil mixture to avoid the plague, which we now know as Thieves Oil.

True or not, the legendary blend of essential oils has endured for centuries, and with good reason. Leading-edge research shows the individual herbal aromas that make up the Thieves Blend can help protect us from menacing microbes, immune system depletion, and possibly even Coronavirus infections.

THIEVES OIL RECIPE

Ready to start cleansing and healing with Thieves oil? Here’s a Thieves essential oil recipe you can make at home! In a clean, empty dark glass bottle, blend:

40 drops Clove bud essential oil 35 drops Lemon essential 20 drops Cinnamon bark essential oil 15 drops Eucalyptus essential oil 10 drops Rosemary essential oil

Mix all the components together and store. When ready to use, either put 5-10 drops of the blend in your diffuser or in 2-4 quarts of water simmering on the stove. Remember that this solution is highly concentrated. Always dilute it properly before using it. Do not place the blend directly on skin and keep away from mucous membranes.

You may also wish to experiment and make your own Thieves Oil blend by adding or substituting other essential oils. Clove, reminiscent of Christmas, Peppermint, smelling green, minty, and cooling, and Tea Tree, Frankincense, and Orange Essence, a burst of liquid sunshine, have bright aromas that uplift the air. They are all also anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and pro-wellness.

THE BENEFITS:

From traditional medicine systems, we know that when brewed or diffused, inhaled essential oils calm physical, emotional, and spiritual stress. Modern studies show that diffused Thieves Oils significantly lowered the airborne levels of three different types of bacteria.

One ingredient, Eucalyptus oil, is reported in many studies to have in vitro antiviral activities against various strains of viruses including enveloped mumps viruses (MV) and herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2). A 2012 study showed that Eucalyptus oil also had antimicrobial activity against two types of bacteria that can cause disease in humans: Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (skin infections).

Other reports indicate Thieves Oil blends can boost the immune system, clear nasal and sinus congestion, promote respiratory and cardiovascular health, and energize and uplift moods.

Recently, the National Institutes of Health and other researchers have been hard at work investigating many of the properties of essential oils as they relate to health and wellness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They have found that Essential Oils “contain multiple active phytochemicals that can act synergistically on multiple stages of viral replication and also induce positive effects on host respiratory system including bronchodilation and mucus lysis.” (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7427755/)

HOW DOES IT WORK:

In aromatherapy, phytochemicals in herbal medicines are extracted as oils which are heated and dispersed into the air. The oil of the plant is its essence, its Soul, and when diffused, volatile molecules make contact with about 300 active olfactory receptor genes in your nose, which directly stimulate the brain.

Take a moment now to enjoy and appreciate your sense of smell. Olfaction is our most primitive sense and yet is one of the most powerful senses. Located in the same part of our brain that effects emotions, memory, and creativity, smelling alerts us to love, smoke from a fire, and how delicious the next bite of food will be. The olfactory system helps us feel grateful for the small pleasures in life.

Medicinal vapors especially impact the amygdala, the emotional center of the brain, calming and balancing both sides of the brain while calming our defenses, and thus nourishing the immune system, but essential oils can also be absorbed by the skin and used in hot baths and massage oils. Be sure to dilute the oil in a carrier oil like coconut or almond oil before placing on the skin.

Other studies show that Lemon oil has antimicrobial properties and that topical application of cinnamaldehyde, a component of Cinnamon oil, promoted wound healing. It also reduced the number of bacteria in wounds infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. One 2013 study found that inhaling Rosemary oil helped participants feel fresher and more active, while improving memory.

Essential oils are an adjunct therapeutic medicine and not intended to replace standard medical care. Washing hands, physical distancing, and now, in many cases for many people, vaccines, are all part of the solution in treating the many expressions of the novel coronavirus. It certainly has been novel!
